My Dearest People,
Dubai has begun the journey of a thousand miles. Since Dubai is the city of a leading civilization and a bright future, and because it is on a steady path towards becoming a City for Everyone - embracing differing abilities and strengths - then it is only natural that we thrive towards an inclusive society; one that grants persons with disabilities their full rights on an equal basis with others. It is for this reason that we have established the "My Community... A City for Everyone" initiative.
We collectively strive for the goal that the "My Community... A City for Everyone" initiative will achieve in the coming years. Together, we look forward to the inclusive culture that will flourish in our society and create a joyful life with opportunities for all. We pledge and promise that all persons with disabilities in Dubai will have the necessary means to enjoy a fulfilled life, to learn, interact, produce and contribute to our society. It is for this reason that we have launched the “My Community... A City for Everyone” initiative.
Dubai believes that persons with disabilities are valuable members of our community who continuously have to strive to overcome the various environmental, social and systemic barriers to seize opportunities, achieve their aspirations, and succeed in life. Dubai seeks to ensure that persons with disabilities obtain their full rights in a fair manner and are able to thrive in an inclusive environment affording them choices of accessible, affordable, and quality services. In addition, we must all aim to raise the community’s general awareness towards the importance of including persons with disabilities as empowered and effective contributors of society. It is for this reason that we have established the “My Community... A City for Everyone” initiative.
We invite you to become an integral part of the joint efforts in international and local communities, which include government organizations and institutions, to promote inclusive policies and practices. We invite everyone to participate in their communities, and to ensure the independence and empowerment of persons with disabilities, thus supporting one another in achieving our collective and individual goals and providing choices and opportunities on an equal basis with others. It is for this reason that we have established the “My Community... A City for Everyone” initiative.
Together, we will eliminate the sense of pity and charity, and replace it with empowerment and respect for all. This is how we will become inclusive and ensure that persons with disabilities are viewed as equal members of society who can leave a meaningful mark in our country. We are committed to working in full alignment with the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which the United Arab Emirates signed in February 2008. Supporting the Convention’s principles, Federal Law No. 29 concerning the rights of persons with disabilities was also introduced in 2006, and Local Dubai Law No. 2 followed in 2014. The law ensures that persons with disabilities are entitled to all the rights prescribed to them in Dubai, that they are respected and treated with dignity, and that their potential as empowered and productive members of society is recognized.
We aim to provide opportunities and a choice of services in social, health and education, employment, and cultural sectors, as well as welcome persons with disabilities into a friendly city that provides them with opportunities to live freely and succeed in life. It is for this reason that we have established the “My Community... A City for Everyone” initiative.
Our intention is to offer a dignified life to all people, despite their differences, and to facilitate the means that will enable everyone to achieve their full potential. It is for this reason that we have established the “My Community... A City for Everyone” initiative.
We call on each individual in Dubai to contribute to creating initiatives that will help us achieve our collective aim of transforming Dubai into a disability-friendly city by 2020. It is only with the cooperation, united support and participation of all parts of society that we can succeed.
Join your hands with the government to serve the interest of persons with disabilities, and to contribute to the betterment of Dubai. And for all those reasons we have established the “My Community... A City for Everyone” initiative.
Together, we will continue to work on enhancing Dubai’s global status as a disability-friendly city.
